Breast Tattoos – A new statement
I was so excited that day that I woke up earlier than usual. I had to get ready within the next hour and that would be odd for a Saturday. I had an appointment with Nicolette, the French Tattoo artist at her studio, downtown. That wasn’t all. I was a bit breathless too. For this was the 1st time I was to get a breast tattoo. “Why a breast tattoo?” My room – mate Maria had asked. “Yes” I had responded. I had made up my mind to let go of all my fears and grow more confident. That is what Theresa my new friend at art class had told me. Theresa, an orphan was brought up in a convent and it was our common disposition that brought us closer to each other. I could see a change in her ever since she had got a breast tattoo.
On reaching the studio, my excitement was overwhelming. It was not the same when I would go on a shopping spree for shoes or clothes. This was different, completely different. I was keen to get this done with as early as possible. It took me a while to choose my design and while Nicolette emptied her cup of coffee I ran through the pages of her album. Finally settling for a delightful butterfly design I settled in on her chair. When she was finally done, I just could not take my eyes off my reflection in the mirror. Theresa was right. I felt different.
Many may find it odd as to why would a woman sport a breast tattoo. While tattoos signify features of considerable depth to many cultures ancient as well as new, they have over the years become a fashion statement to many. A breast tattoo, to me is not merely an enhancement as it may seem to a few. For me it signifies confidence of different degree. It brings alive a sense of fulfillment within me. Although I get to see it when I am alone, looking at the rich colors of the butterfly nestled on my right breast brings a soft smile on my lips.
Tattooing has been in practice centuries and every kind of tattoo had purpose. In ancient India, the husband’s name would be tattooed on the back of woman. This was to show that she belonged to him. Sailors have been tattooing their arms and chest with names of ships they would have sailed in or a dagger to display a fierce disposition to prospective adversaries.
Contemporary tattoo artists have opened up their schemes of imaginative spots, especially on women and a breast tattoo is one such creative canvas of masterpiece caliber. Using various designs to exemplify the particular woman’s stand or a rant or then even her demure form, the artist has been able to earn a very faithful place amongst his or her clients. As for me, it has been quite a while since I got the tattoo, each day I find it anew right where I wanted it to be. Close to my heart.
